Hoy vamos a hablar de un fenómeno muy curioso en inglés: los reduplicatives. Un reduplicative es una palabra o lexema que contiene dos partes idénticas o muy similares.
Muy probablemente ya os son familiares, simplemente no sabíais que existía un nombre para ellos 😉 Los reduplicatives son formaciones tales como ok-dokey, zig-zag, hobnob, pell-mell, herky-jerky, hoity-toity, itsy-bitsy, niminy-piminy.

Today we are going to talk about a very curious phenomena in English: reduplicatives. A reduplicative is a word or lexem that contains two identical or very similar parts.
You are probably already familiar with reduplicatives words, you just didn’t know that there was a name for it 😉 They are formulations such as ok-dokey, zig-zag, hobnob, pell-mell, herky-jerky, hoity-toity, itsy-bitsy, niminy-piminy.

También se les llama tautonym, echo words o echo phrases / They can be also called tautonym, echo words, or echo phrases

Los reduplicatives nunca viajan solos, siempre van en pareja y pueden sonar bastante absurdos / Reduplicatives never travel alone! Actually, they always come in pairs and may sound rather silly.

Se forman a través de reduplicación de palabras y hay tres tipos básicos de reduplicatives / They are formed through reduplication of words and there are three basic types of reduplicatives:
– algunos se forman reduplicando exactamente la misma palabra/ some are formed by repeating exactly the same word → win win, chop chop…
– algunos hacen un pequeño cambio en una vocal o consonante sobre la primera palabra para llegar a la otra mitad de la pareja / some make a small vowel or consonant shift to come up with the other half of the pair → chit chat, tick tock

algunos usan la rima para la formación de la formación / some use rhyme for formation → fuddy-duddy, willy-nilly

La mayoría de ellos son palabras de dos sílabas, aunque hay algunas con tres sílabas / The majority of them are two-syllable words, although there are some with three syllables.

Algunos de ellos son bastante antiguos y otros son bastante recientes adiciones como chick-flick (género literario) o flip flops (chanclas) / Some of them are quite old and others are quite recent additions like chick-flick or flip flops
Los reduplicatives no son precisamente fáciles de recordar, pero al menos ahora los reconoceréis cuando los veáis. En cualquier caso vamos os dejamos una lista con algunos de los más comunes para que podáis empezar a familiarizaros con ellos. ¡Cuanto antes mejor! 😉 / Reduplicatives are not exactly easy to remember, but at least now you will recognize it when you see them. Nevertheless we are going to give you a list with some of the most common ones so you can start familiarizing yourself with them! The sooner the better! 😉

zigzag
tutti-frutti
ha ha – el sonido de la risa
bang-bang – el sonido que hace una pistola
ding-dong – el sonido que hace timbre
tick tock – el sonido que hace un reloj
choo-choo – el sonido que hace un tren
bye-bye – adios
night-night – ¡buenas noches!
okey-dokey – OK!
super-duper – buenísimo, súper guay, requetebien
Otros serán nuevos pero fáciles de recordar 😉 / Others will be new for you but still easy to remember
chit-chat – charla cotilla, cotillear
hush-hush – confidencial, top secret
win win situation– una situación en que varias personas salen ganando
easy-peasy – muy fácil
chop, chop – rápido, date prisa
airy-fairy – poco realista, poco práctico
hocus-pocus – abracadabra, ¡magia potagia!
helter-skelter – tobogán, atolondradamente o atropelladamente
fuddy-duddy – anticuado
mish-mash – revoltijo, batiburillo
itsy-bitsy – diminuto
goody goody – santurrón/a
shilly-shally – titubear
willy-nilly – te guste o no
